Breastfeeding mother files complaint after guards tell her to stop nursing in Montreal mall – MONTREALINABOX

A Montreal woman has filed a complaint with the Quebec Human Rights Commission after security guards at the Montreal Eaton Centre asked her to stop breastfeeding her four-month-old son Léopold while she was sitting on a bench at the downtown shopping complex Saturday.

“A female security guard approached me and said I wasn’t allowed to breastfeed on that specific bench,”  Isabelle Côté told CBC in an interview Tuesday.

“I was really surprised. I said: ‘Why not?’ And she said, ‘This is an intimate act, so you can’t do that in public.'” .

Côté said the security guard then asked her to go to a room the mall had designated for nursing mothers.

Côté said she didn’t want to do that. She was waiting for her sister who was in a store, and she was in the middle of breastfeeding.

“If I stop, my baby is going to cry, and then I have to repack everything. I have my bags all over,” she said she told the guard.

“Despite the help of the Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough and the Table de quartier sud de l’Ouest-de-l’Île, no affordable locations meeting our needs (for a shelter) were found.” — AJOI executive director Tania Charron

While initially informed it had to vacate its current location in Pierrefonds by the end of March, the Halte-Transition shelter has been given a reprieve until at least June 30, noted Action Jeunesse de l’Ouest-de-l’île (AJOI) executive director Tania Charron.

The shelter to help unhoused people began operating in December 2020 at 5100 Château-Pierrefonds Ave. That facility is owned by CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal and is one of two sites being considered for a new rehabilitation centre to care for intellectually challenged clientele.

Since January, AJOI has been asking West Islanders to help them find a new locale…

Montreal Greek Independence Day 2022 parade to be held March 27 – MONTREALINABOX

The parade will showcase the various schools of the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal, associations, and other communities.

The Greek Independence Day parade will be held Sunday, March 27, at 1 p.m. And for the first time since 2019, it will be held along the usual route on Jean-Talon St. between l’Acadie Blvd. and Hutchinson St, after the pandemic forced its cancellation in 2020 and it was held online in 2021.

A tradition for more than 40 years, the parade will showcase the various schools of the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal, associations, and other communities. The groups will consist of 10 to 12 people at most in order to respect current health guidelines.

Greek or not, bring your flags and get ready to pay tribute to the history, the heroism and the independence of the nation that started it all. The HCGM continues the more-than-40-year-old tradition of organising a series of commemorative events whereby Montrealers celebrate Greek Independence Day:

Thursday, March 24th at 18:00: – Vespers Service at the Greek Orthodox Church Evangelismos tis Theotokou, 777 St-Roch, in the Parc-Extension borough.

Friday, March 25th at 9:00: – Divine Liturgy at the Greek Orthodox Church Evangelismos tis Theotokou.

Friday, March 25nd at 19:00: – Official Dinner…

‘Tears of joy’ as 11-year-old Montreal girl breathes normally for the first time – MONTREALINABOX

Every summer, no matter how stifling the heat, 11-year-old Christina Rancy has been forced to watch from afar as her twin sister and friends splashed about and plunged their heads under the water to cool off.

Waist-deep was as far as she could go, to make sure that not a drop of water got inside the tracheostomy tube protruding from her neck that has allowed her to breathe almost since birth.

But she won’t be sidelined anymore. In a series of long and complex operations, a surgeon at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) was able to reconstruct Christina’s weak and damaged trachea using moulds and cartilage from her ribs.

This feat of surgical engineering, only performed four to six times a year at the MCH, means the young girl is now untethered from the tubing and is breathing freely for the first time in her life.

“This summer I would really like to go swimming,” Christina said without hesitation in an interview with CTV News, when asked what she’s most looking forward to now.

Her parents are thrilled to be able to help her immerse in her new chosen activity. Her father, Herode Rancy,…
