Dance parties and protests in Quebec on eve of COVID-19 restrictions taking effect – MONTREALINABOX

MONTREAL — Infectious disease specialist Dr. Matthew Oughton is unimpressed that multiple bars and nightclubs in Quebec have decided that this weekend is the time to dance.

“The best way I can describe this is that there’s a viral fire going on in the streets of Montreal, and across other parts of Quebec as well, and all of us, unfortunately, are kindling,” said Oughton. “I would ask people, don’t throw yourself on the fire that you’re in to help us keep the flame down.”

Some bars in Montreal and Quebec City have held or are planning dance parties this weekend before new restrictions come into effect Monday.

Blvd44’s “La Derniere Danse” party is Sunday night starting at 10 p.m., while Dagobert Nightclub in Quebec City will host an event with the same name in the provincial capital.

“We are expecting you in large numbers,” the nightclub wrote on its Facebook page. “For the occasion, we decided to open all floors.”

Oughton was quick to caution that drinking, singing, close contact and other activities at clubs are ways the virus has spread.

The Omicron variant has made it even more important to urge on the…

Laval restaurant closes after at least 30 infected in outbreak; early testing shows Omicron – MONTREALINABOX

A Laval restaurant is closing voluntarily for at least a week after a staff member and about 30 other people caught COVID-19 in holiday-party season.

At least one of the infections linked to the Boating Club restaurant, on the city’s north shore, is presumed to be Omicron, said Laval public health spokesperson Marie-Eve Despatie-Gagnon.

It isn’t believed the popular restaurant was breaking any public health rules, she said — it was just a case of “bad luck” and the new, very transmissible virus.

“We have excellent collaboration with the Boating Club,” said Despatie-Gagnon.

The restaurant decided on its own to close, rather than being ordered closed by public health, she said. In an announcement on its Facebook page on Thursday afternoon, the restaurant’s ownership said it made the decision after getting test results back from health authorities.

“We regret to inform you that Laval Public Health has just informed us that a case of Omicron has been detected at our restaurant bar,” read the restaurant’s announcement.

“We have decided as a precaution to close the restaurant and bar for the week,” it added, saying it may reopen just before Christmas but “definitely December…

Possible Omicron exposure forces two Montreal area schools to close – MONTREALINABOX

Two schools in Montreal have closed after a potential exposure to the Omicron variant.

According to COVID Écoles Québec, École Sainte-Geneviève-Sud in Lasalle and École primaire des Coquelicots in Verdun have both been shut down until December 24.

COVID Écoles Québec, a publication that monitors COVID-19 outbreaks across schools in the province, says “various students” have received a positive COVID-19 Omicron test.

All students and staff are being asked to get tested for the virus by December 22.

Staff and students are being asked to send their results to the respective schools once they receive their results.

Earlier this week, Quebec’s Health Minister Christian Dubé announced that rapid tests will be made available to Quebecers at all local pharmacies, in an attempt to quickly monitor the spread of Omicron.

Dubé also urged Quebecers to work from amid a rise in cases and hospitalizations.

In French, the minister said that experts agree that omicron is “much more transmissible than the Delta variant,” citing that it travels “faster…

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment, MoCA: a brief screening tool for mild cognitive impairment – MONTREALINABOX

Objectives: To develop a 10-minute cognitive screening tool (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, MoCA) to assist first-line physicians in detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a clinical state that often progresses to dementia.

Design: Validation study.

Setting: A community clinic and an academic center.

Participants: Ninety-four patients meeting MCI clinical criteria supported by psychometric measures, 93 patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score > or =17), and 90 healthy elderly controls (NC).

Measurements: The MoCA and MMSE were administered to all participants, and sensitivity and specificity of both measures were assessed for detection of MCI and mild AD.

Results: Using a cutoff score 26, the MMSE had a sensitivity of 18% to detect MCI, whereas the MoCA detected 90% of MCI subjects. In the mild AD group, the MMSE had a sensitivity of 78%, whereas the MoCA detected 100%. Specificity was excellent for both MMSE and MoCA (100% and 87%, respectively).

Conclusion: MCI as an entity is evolving and somewhat controversial. The MoCA is a brief cognitive screening tool with high sensitivity and specificity for detecting MCI as currently conceptualized in patients performing in the…
