Popular Mile End Restaurant Larrys is Going Tip-Free – MONTREALINABOX

When Mile End mainstay Larrys resumes full-fledged table service on its street-side terrasse next Monday, June 7, there will be one crucial change to how it operates: no more tipping.

The restaurant announced the decision to abolish tipping via Instagram on June 2, saying that the pandemic year had led it to “consider who we want to be going forward.” Its answer is simple: An establishment where workers’ earnings aren’t beholden to the whims — or even the presence — of patrons.

“The people that serve you are professionals and we think it’s about time that they’re paid like professionals by their employer (us) rather than our customers (hopefully you!),” Larrys said in the post. Keaton Ritchie, general manager at the restaurant, tells Eater that the salary range across front- and back-of-house — established on experience, seniority, and responsibilities — is $18 to $40 an hour. For comparison: As of May 1, the minimum wage in Quebec sits at $13.50, and $10.80 for tipped workers.

This isn’t the first time a Montreal restaurant has tried to do away with tipping: Two Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie venues, Bistro Rosie and Zero 8, adopted the model a couple years back —…

Damage to Montreal kosher restaurant one of multiple Canadian hate crimes in 2021 – MONTREALINABOX

(June 15, 2021 / JNS) A kosher restaurant in Montreal is temporarily closed after it was vandalized on Sunday night in what is believed to be a hate crime.

According to a press release issued by B’nai Brith Canada, “On Sunday night, unknown assailants shattered the front door of Chez Benny in Ville Saint-Laurent with a rock, then attempt to light a fire, which failed to catch due to a lack of flammable material. There was no evidence of any attempt to take money or valuables from the restaurant. No one was in the restaurant at the time of the incident.”

Two other non-kosher restaurants are in the same plaza as Chez Benny; neither was damaged.

The vandalism comes amid a rising number of hate crimes across Canada since mid-May when Hamas sent more than 4,000 rockets towards population centers in Israel. According to B’nai Brith, the organization had recorded as many hate crimes in May 2021 as it had during the entire year of 2020.

Canadiens make 1st Stanley Cup Final since ’93 – MONTREALINABOX

The Montreal Canadiens are going to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993. Montreal defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 in Game 6 at home in overtime on Thursday to continue its improbable run.

Artturi Lehkonen scored the winning goal 1:39 into OT.

No Canadian team has hoisted the Stanley Cup since Montreal won in 1993. Few predicted the Habs would be the last Canadian team standing this year. Ahead of the postseason, Caesars Sportsbook by William Hill listed Montreal at +3500 to win the Cup.

Montreal had the worst regular-season record (.527 points percentage) of any team in the playoff field.

“Honestly, we wouldn’t be here right now if we didn’t believe,” goaltender Carey Price said. “We always kind of stuck with it, not doubting ourselves.”

The last Canadian team to reach the Stanley Cup Final was the 2011 Vancouver Canucks. Before this current 28-year title drought, the longest the NHL had gone without awarding a Stanley Cup to a Canadian team was a six-year stretch between 1936 to 1941.

The Canadiens have won an NHL-record 24 Stanley Cups. They will face the winner of Friday’s Game 7 between the Tampa Bay Lightning and

This secret new restaurant in Toronto gets its smoked meat shipped in from Montreal – MONTREALINABOX

You can find some of the best smoked meat in Toronto shipped straight from Montreal downtown once again, and in an area that’s lost some of the city’s great delis.

“I loved Mel’s on Bloor back in the day, and Caplanksy’s used to be a block away from us,” FreePlay managing partner Jake Yakobi tells blogTO.

Yakobi has been doing hospitality-related work since 1999, curating music for businesses and attending food service and hotel shows around the world.

According to him, that’s how he connected with “a smokehouse doing things the traditional way for decades” that now provides the meat for his virtual restaurant MTL Smoked.

Yakobi won’t reveal the specific smokehouse, only that “they produce for some of the more famous smoked meat spots in Montreal.”

FreePlay is a barcade in Little Italy, but during the pandemic it’s pivoted to become a virtual food hall that also hosts Chef Noel Cunningham, Camp Smokehouse, Tokyo Hot Fried Chicken and Keto Food Co.

“It was the perfect environment to start a food…

20 Opulent Eats in Old Montreal – MONTREALINABOX

The historical neighbourhood of Old Montreal is both a prime destination for tourists and a veritable mecca for some of the city’s most prized chefs and restaurants. While the centuries-old buildings and cobblestoned streets lure in plenty of visitors, there’s still plenty of reasons for locals to brave the crowds; the cooking here is as storied as its surroundings, from popular young guns to top brass.

This map stretches the boundaries of Old Montreal to include the ambiguous Cité-du-Multimédia section — restaurants in the area bounded by Robert-Bourassa to the west, Viger to the north, the St. Lawrence river to the south, and Berri to the east were all considered.

Note: Restaurants on this map are listed geographically.

COVID-19: Montreal restaurants, bars look ahead to reopening date with mixed emotions – MONTREALINABOX

The Quebec government confirmed Tuesday evening that restaurants and bars will be able to open outdoor terraces on May 28 and June 11, respectively, even in the province’s red zones.

“After the speech of the premier, people were already asking, ‘Can we have our table?’” said the owner of Ziggy’s pub, Ziggy Eichenbaum.

On Wednesday, the owner of the downtown watering hole was wiping down his outdoor tables and chairs in preparation for his pubs reopening on June 11.

For many bars like Eichenbaum’s that have been closed the past seven months, the government’s reopening plan is a lifeline.

“I’m preparing everything. I’m very, very excited,” he told Global News.

By the time outdoor terraces are allowed to reopen, the Burgundy Lion’s courtyard will be ready to serve and celebrate.

“Eight a.m. pints and breakfast. This — I’m dead serious. Like, it sounds like I’m joking, but I’m not. The Lion will have its terrace ready and we will be open at 8:00 a.m., pints and breakfast,” said the restaurant’s owner, Paul Desbaillets.

However, not all restaurants will be welcoming customers…

Video of Montreal Police Kneeling on Black Teenager Spurs Outcry – MONTREALINABOX

MONTREAL — For some Canadians, the 90-second video evoked memories of George Floyd: A white police officer appears to be kneeling on the neck of a Black teenager who is face down on the ground on a Montreal street.

The police said on Saturday that they were investigating what happened after a video of the encounter drew an outcry from politicians and human rights advocates, many of whom expressed alarm over the way the 14-year-old appears to have been restrained.

The Montreal police said that the encounter took place on June 10 after officers were called to the scene of a fight among 15 young people near a high school in Montreal’s Villeray neighborhood. They said that two of the youths were armed.

It was not clear what happened in the lead-up to the encounter between the officer and the teenager. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the teenager was subdued by officers’ knees for less than a minute and that one officer said the youth had what appeared to be a stun gun.

The outcry comes as Canada has been undergoing a national awakening about institutional racism, including among police forces, that has been fueled by the Black Lives Matter…

Outremont restaurateur Patricia Lévêque says Premier François Legault hadn’t even finished discussing details of his back-to-normal roadmap last week when her work phone began ringing.

“We started getting reservations during the premier’s press conference,” said Lévêque, whose eponymous Laurier Ave. brasserie will turn 50 next year. “By the next day, we were pretty much fully booked. I’ve never lived through a war, but this must be what a liberation feels like.”

The 100 London restaurants you have to eat at – MONTREALINABOX

When to go: When you want to pretend that you’re a grown-up, but still be made to feel welcome.

What to have: Fewer of the ‘small courses’ than you’d imagine. Two is sufficient for lunch, three is fine for dinner, especially if you’re on a budget Don’t forget: you’ll get freebies like amuses bouche, bread and petits fours, too.

If you like Murano, you may like…
Locanda Locatelli, Luca, The River Café

For those of you who only know Angela Hartnett off the telly and can’t perhaps fathom how the warm, Essex-accented chef came to own and run an Italian restaurant, you should know that she was taught to cook by her Upminster-based Italian nonna. The food at Murano, which was originally launched by her mentor Gordon Ramsay, but which she bought outright after winning it a Michelin star, is a reflection of her heritage. It carries all the technical skill of her time in some of the capital’s best fine-dining spots, but is still, ultimately, food made with love, that you could imagine coming out of a (very fancy) Italian home. The vibe is similar: sure, it’s tasteful and plush (no open kitchen, no loud music, lots of carpet), but…
